Our client already had some perfectly sound, hand made kitchen units, but was extending her kitchen and removing one of the walls against which some of the units were located. An Aga and mantle piece was also to be slotted in amongst the existing units. We therefore designed a kitchen which would make maximum use of her ‘old’ units. We then made a new mantle which scalloped back to provide the maximum amount of worktop space, and placed a set of small ‘wood-on-wood’ drawers either side of the Aga.
We then re-fitted the ‘old’ units flowing down through the original kitchen area and into the new extension. We added a semi-circular peninsular to make sense of the supporting pillar which joined the old and new and helped keep the whole area open as one room, whilst providing a punctuation to offer the cosiness of two smaller parts.
The room was then completed with a new dresser and island unit. We also provided a hanging pan rack in which spotlights were housed to provide the central lighting for the main cooking area. The furniture was then hand painted with an ‘aged’ effect in cream, red, green and powder blue.
